Comfort Dentistry at Dunedin Dental Care in Dunedin, FL

Comfort dentistry, also called “sedation dentistry,” consists of medical sedation to instill calmness and relaxation into patients during various dental treatment procedures. Dentists who are professionally trained in comfort dentistry are able to assign the appropriate amount of anesthetics to patients in need of sedation without a dentist anesthesiologist present. Comfort dentistry is commonly used during dental procedures that are particularly painful or uncomfortable for patients to endure without medication, such as oral surgeries, extractions and other treatments. These options are optimal for patients who have a low pain threshold, have a sensitive gag reflex, can’t sit still in the dentist’s chair, have sensitive teeth or need a large amount of dental work performed. There are four different types of sedation comfort dentistry: minimal sedation (patients are awake, but relaxed), moderate sedation (formerly called “conscious sedation”), deep sedation (patients are on the edge of consciousness but may still be awakened) and general anesthesia (patients are completely unconscious).
